Tips for Buying Wine
- Pay
attention to the wine's appellation -- the area where
the wine was grown. The fact is better wines come from
better vineyards. Big names like Napa or Sonoma rarely
disappoint.
- Pay
attention to vintage -- the wine's "born-on date."
Most wineries are producing wines that can and should
be experienced fresh (from a few months to a few years).
-
Try something new to keep your palette interested -- buy
an assorted case to sample smaller producers and take
advantage of the 10-to-15 percent case discount.
- Do
not buy refrigerated wines -- cold refrigeration over
a long period of time can have a negative impact on the
wine.
- Ask
for help -- most owners and many salespersons are professionals
and will be happy to help.
- Comparison
shop -- but don't let price be your only guide.
- Wine
tastings -- attend these events and learn more about your
tastes. Many wine boutiques have email newsletters that
keep you posted on their products and events.
- Discount
cards -- ask your local wine shop if they have a discount
program.
- Take
notes -- it can be difficult to remember which wines you
like -- and which ones you don't. It's never fun to buy
a $50 bottle only to remember "that's the one"
you didn't like.

Know
Your Rights as an Air Traveler
If you've
every flown, you have probably experienced delays, cancellations
and possibly missed connections. As a passenger, you have
rights, but if you don't know them, the airline will likely
take advantage of you.
Major
airlines have filed "conditions of carriage" with
the U.S. Department of Transportation that spell out what
they will provide travelers with under various circumstances,
including free meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, phone
calls and other services, booking substitute flights on
other airlines -- and even offering full refunds.
Travel
experts recommend that you carry a copy of your airline's
"conditions of carriage" when you travel, which
can often be found on the airline's website. Just print
it out and tuck it away in your travel bag so it's always
with you. Don't count on the ticket agent to have a copy
-- or even be aware their airline has a policy.
